Building on a legacy

On 22 July 1822, animal rights campaigner and Member of Parliament, Richard Martin, succeeded in getting the UK’s first animal protection law—the Cruel Treatment of Cattle Act—passed. Nicknamed ‘Martin’s Act’, this law paved the way for more progressive animal protection legislation in the UK and beyond.

Our goals

Our aim is to develop the Centre as a skilled legal resource, contributing to a better understanding of legal rights for all sentient animals, and helping to make change possible. The Centre explores what animal rights laws could look like, as well as presenting the merits and drawbacks of animal rights law. The Centre is made up of world-leading academics who research and publish in the field, support conferences and workshops on animal rights law, and engage with policymakers and governments in the UK, Europe, and beyond.

Why we need your help

As an educational centre, we require funding to support research, teaching, and the promotion of intellectual exchange. To spread the message as far as possible, we strive to make everything we offer publicly available and free of charge, so that anyone may benefit. We are also recording our lectures and talks so they are accessible to everyone.

Animal rights law may be one of the worthiest causes that we can devote ourselves to.
